Pine. As with a futon, who hated us, very uncomfortable.
"Light", "robust" and "cheap" rarely go together when they talk about the furniture. I think for the top three, you want to oak.
The bulk of the wood, you should see your local timber merchant contact related to available and prices.
lighter and more resistant not usually go together in this kind of project. I went with the oak.
Oak is good but is difficult and expensive. These poplars. Pine is cheap, but low. Douglas would be my choice. I think it matches your search criteria.
A good, solid pine will work. It is easier, cheaper, and may take some time if you're not careful.
